Rainier is committed to environmental sustainability, starting with reducing the amount of waste generated in our manufacturing plant – and that includes the waste that comes out of our lunchroom! When we launched our environmental initiative in 2008, we began added compost bins for food waste, and began using compostable paper plates and cups exclusively.
Did you know that in the U.S., 16 billion paper cups are used annually for coffee alone? That accounts for 6.5 million trees cut down, 4 billion gallons of water, and enough energy to power homes for a year going into the trash!
On average, Rainier’s Tukwila location used:
5,800 paper cups per month — that’s 69,600 per year!
2,835 paper plates per month — or 42,020 per year!
Although our paper cups and plates were composted, our Environmental Management System recognizes that there is always room for improvement. This month, we’re proudly doing away with paper and our lunchroom is newly stocked with reusable plates, cups, and mugs, and a new eco-efficient dishwasher.
We’re excited to make our lunchroom a more welcoming space, and to diminish even more of the waste generated in our plant.
