Case Study: An Oversized Screen

Some people will tell you they work best under pressure – at Rainier, we do some of our best work when our clients’ requests challenge our capabilities. Our most recent challenge was this over-sized screen for a residence in Tacoma.


The customer wanted sun and wind protecting for her large patio opening. However, at 28 feet wide and with a 10 foot drop, it exceeded the standard width for our SRS retention screens by three feet!

We’ve worked around this for previous projects by adding a support beam to the middle, or installing two screens side-by-side. Our customer didn’t want to break up the large opening of her patio and who could blame her?! She has a beautiful view of the Tacoma waterfront.

To satisfy our client’s needs on this project, we used our largest Series 5 screen housing and built a custom roller-support cradle to support the length.

The customer was thrilled with the overall results. The screen fit her house perfectly – especially with the dark gray fabric and custom dark gray powder coat color, which blends seamlessly in to the look of the home. Speaking of seamless, we made the fabric panel with no seams, so she has no obstructions of the view.

Rainier Produces Ken Griffey Jr Hall of Fame Banner

Rainier was honored to be a part of Ken Griffey Jr’s induction to the Mariners Hall of Fame by producing and installing the big banner that hung in center field during the ceremony.


What a beautiful evening for the Mariner Nation.  Much of the work we are doing today for sports teams across the nation were a direct result of what we learned back in the day when Junior was hitting home runs at the Kingdome.  So many great memories from one of the greatest players in baseball history.

Our Tent and Camping Catalog from 1969


1969 is well known as the year of the first moon landing.

This isn’t as commonly known, but it’s also the year Seattle Tent & Awning (acquired by Puget Sound Tent & Awning in 1985) published this tent and camping catalog, complete with comics by Seattle’s flying cartoonist, John Holm.

Rainier Wins IFAI 2012 International Achievement Award for Olympic Stadium Wrap

The Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) 2012 International Achievement Awards (IAA) for design excellence in specialty fabrics applications ceremony took place Nov. 7 at the IFAI Expo Americas 2012, at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in Boston, Mass.

This year’s competition included 30 categories. IFAI received a total of 335 entries from companies in 14 countries. Winners were selected based on complexity, design, workmanship, uniqueness and function. Judges included industry experts, editors, architects, educators and design professionals who were chosen for their knowledge in a particular field of study or product area.

Rainier was selected to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award in the Fabric Graphics category.

The Dow Chemical Company, an Olympic Sponsor, selected Rainier to produce and install the London 2012 Olympic Stadium Wrap.

Dow’s goal was to help the games be more safe and sustainable.

Designed to envelop the entire outside facade of the stadium, the wrap encircles an area of over 200,010 square feet and includes 336 panels.

Each panel is twisted 90 degrees from top to bottom in the form of a helix, spanning 8-1/2 feet wide by 80 feet high.

The panels are printed with artwork commissioned by the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The Cooley Group was enlisted to extrude a new and unique non-PVC material made from resins created by the Dow Chemical Company’s Performance Plastics Division which require fewer raw materials in the fabric’s production.

A subcontractor, FabriTec, was responsible for the design, cabling and installation of the 336 fabric panels.

According to Dow, “The Olympic Wrap material will be up to 35 percent lighter and have a lower carbon footprint when compared to conventional materials.

Other sustainable elements of the wrap include UV-curable inks replacing conventional inks which reduce emissions during the printing process and eliminate volatile organic compounds.

The wrap will include post-industrial recycled content and the hardware used to hang the wrap will be recycled in Europe following the games.”

To satisfy increasing demand for their tent products in the event rental business, Rainier Industries has completed the acquisition of The SEC Group in Wilsonville, Oregon.

Rainier will continue to manufacture product in Seattle, while The SEC Group remains in their Wilsonville, Oregon facility.

Rainier Industries Opening East Coast Awning and Screen Manufacturing Facility to Meet Demand for Expanding Product Lines

Company acquires 220,000 square feet of building space on 32 acre campus from Glen Raven. The former John Boyle Company facility will be used to provide better service and quicker delivery time to Rainier’s expanding East Coast dealer network.


SEATTLE, WA – October 17, 2012

To satisfy increasing demand for their retractable awning and screen products, Rainier Industries has completed the acquisition of a new 220,000 square foot manufacturing facility from Glen Raven, Inc. Located in Statesville, North Carolina, the 32 acre campus provides a central location for east coast shipping.

“We are thrilled to be expanding our manufacturing footprint to the East Coast, and doing it in a former John Boyle facility is particularly satisfying from an industry perspective.” commented Rainier president, Scott Campbell. “Glen Raven has been a pleasure to work with through the acquisition and is a key supplier to the industry.”

Rainier is refitting the plant to accommodate complete manufacturing of both retractable awnings and screens with a multi-million dollar investment in new equipment.

Rainier plans to be shipping product from this facility in the first quarter of 2013.

Rainier’s Medal-Worthy London Olympic Stadium Wrap

“On a Friday in late July, the Seattle offices of grand-format custom manufacturer Rainier were abuzz with excitement. And little wonder.

It was the day of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremonies, and Rainier employees were seeing the first dramatic televised shots of the Olympic Stadium, dressed up in 336 colorful 80-foot high panels produced by Rainier.

In partnership with Dow Chemical Company and the Cooley Group, Rainier had spent nearly the previous year and a half working on the London Olympic Stadium wrap. Finding the right materials, then getting them printed, and finally ensuring they were correctly installed, had at times appeared an almost insurmountable task “

Olympic Stadium Wrap to Be Repurposed for Use in Rio, Uganda and UK

We reported earlier this month (read post here) that discussions were being held regarding the best way to repurpose the iconic fabric “wrap” that surrounds the Olympic Stadium, and that the intent was to use the panels for shelter someplace where shade is needed. Now it’s confirmed: the Wrap will live on.

Dow announced on August 13th that they’ve partnered with leading UK building and development charity Article 25 and recycling company Axion Recycling to repurpose the entire stadium wrap. The panels are slated for recycling and reuse projects in the UK, and shelter solutions for at-risk children in Uganda and Rio.

In Brazil, Dow and Article 25 are exploring working with the Bola Pra Frente Institute to construct a shaded community area at the organization’s new facility in the Santa Cruz neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. The Institute was created in 2000 to help children and teenagers from underprivileged communities through social programs focused on education, sports, arts and professional training. Rio will be home to the Summer Olympics in 2016.

The same sheltering solution will be used as part of Article 25’s work with Jubilee Action at a vocational training and counseling center for former child soldiers in Uganda.

The stadium wrap panels will remain as much in their current shape as possible, keeping the look of the Games that has inspired athletes and spectators around the world.

In addition, Dow is working with Manchester-based Axion Recycling to implement additional projects for reuse or recycling of the wrap within the UK. Axion director Keither Freegard says that Axion has “already demonstrated that the stadium wrap can be recycled back into new plastic raw material in our Manchester factory.”

Dow worked with the Building Research Establishment, UK (BRE) to screen and narrow the list of options for the post-Games use of the wrap. In its evaluation, BRE took into account various factors including waste creation, extent of reprocessing required, technical challenge, scale and end of second life use.

London won the honor of hosting the Olympics in 2012 by promising to inspire a generation of young people around the world to greater heights of personal and sporting achievement.
