There are two types of ancient yurts – the Mongolian ger and the Turkic üy – on which our modern yurts are based. The circular structures were used by nomadic tribes, as they were light and easily portable, and could be set up or taken down quickly.

These ancient yurts were made with lattice walls, which were collapsible for ease of transportation. The walls were self supporting and made of willow, covered in felted sheep’s wool or yak hide to fend off the cold climates. Their circular construction provided the sturdiest structure, as well as a connection to the earth for the nomads who lived in them.

The crafting of the Rainier Yurt honors these ancient traditions, retaining the round layout, the sturdy lattice, and the fabric walls.
