They teamed up with Zetterberg Custom Homes for its annual Northwest Idea House. The beautiful home features the newest and best ideas in building and innovation, including our power screens and retractable awnings. We were excited to be part of the project, and the results were simply stunning. Our power screens allow for indoor-outdoor living. We enclosed the outdoor kitchen space for entertaining year round. Traditional Home Magazine

Rainier Shade was featured at the first ever Dallas Showhouse hosted by Traditional Home magazine! This was created by Texas real estate developer Paul Moss’ Marina Bay Development Corp., and his wife, well known designer and TV host Donna Moss. The home featured high end home products, including Rainier Screens. Even better, the event benefited a great cause and the proceeds from selling the house will go to the Alzheimer’s Association. The association is committed to eliminating the disease, including care and support for those with Alzheimer’s, and reducing the risk of dementia by promoting brain health. We are proud and humbled to have been part of this event that benefits such a great cause, and one that affects so many people. Creators Paul and Donna Moss both had parents affected by the disease. Rainier owner Scott Campbell’s father who previously owned Rainier, Robert Campbell, also had Alzheimer’s. Rainier donated the screens that were featured, and our dealer Southwest Shade Solutions in Dallas donated the installation by their expert crew. Six Questions To Ask Before You Buy An Awning

So you want to buy an awning. It’s a smart move! But it’s a big purchase, and you’re a smart buyer so you’ll want to do some research before you sign the dotted line. These are six questions to ask your salesperson (whether you’re considering an awning from Rainier or one of our nationwide dealers.) We hope these questions will help you make an informed purchase decision. Where will the awning be installed? For most of our customers, the awning will be over a deck or a door. Ask if the location will fit your needs and provide the protection from the shade you’re hoping for. How will the awning be mounted? The awning can be mounted to the exterior wall, to the roof above the gutter, or to the eave under the soffit. This is an important discussion to have, because this will affect the height of the awning, and thus, the pitch (or, how steep the slope is.) The mount will make a difference when it comes time for the awning to be installed. What does the warranty cover? This can be a little confusing, because the different components all have different warranties. On all products, our frame finish is warranted to be free of defects in workmanship and materials under proper use and no closer than 1 mile from the ocean, for five (5) years from the original date of purchase. We warranty our installation for the first year. We use Sunbrella fabric that is warranted by the manufacturer for ten (10) years; and the motor is warrantied by Somfy (the manufacturer) for five (5) years. Be sure to ask your salesperson for more detailed information. Is motorized or manual the best option for you? We’re biased, but we highly recommend motorization for your awning! We’ve learned from customer surveys that the customers who have motorized awnings are much happier with their purchases than those who have manual. Motorized awnings are convenient (you can even control the awning with an app on your smartphone) and you won’t have to use your arm muscles. However, many customers choose manual operation. Often because they don’t have electricity on their decks and having it installed would be too costly or, in some cases, their home owner’s association would not allow for it. What is the lead time? You’ll want to make sure that the awning can be installed at a time that is convenient for you. Who will install the awning?We recommend working with a company who uses professional installers – like our skilled team! Some of our customers choose to install their awnings themselves, but be aware that this will affect your warranty.

Going Green with a Rainier Screen

Well, it’s another hot summer here in Seattle! The Rainier team is committed to sustainability, and we know that being environmentally friendly is important to our customers, too. Here are a few of the ways that an awning or screen can help you go green this summer: Using an awning or exterior screen to cool a home is more energy efficient than traditional air conditioning. We participated in funding and research for an independent study which found that shading with a screen or awning can reduce cooling costs here in the Seattle area by over 60%! Our exterior screens keep as much as 85% of the heat from the sun from cranking up the temperature in your living room. Nearly all of the components of our screens and awnings are manufactured in-house, so they’re not being imported from overseas. It’s estimated that about 25% of the total carbon footprint generated today comes from the movement of goods between international companies. This is called “embedded emissions,” and it’s pretty interesting – Carbon Trust is the company leading the way in research on the topic, and you can read their article on embedded emissions here. And if you’re still not convinced, here are a couple of Rainier’s bragging points: We are ISO 14001:2015 certified – we have a sustainability plan in place and keep track of seven key measurements for our overall carbon footprint. Those are things like the quality of the air in our production facility and how our employees are getting to work (many of them regularly commute by bike!) We were the City of Tukwila’s #1 recycler in 2012! We recycled or composted 99 tons of waste (that’s 82% of the total waste generated!) in the first quarter of 2013. We were also one of King County’s best workplaces for recycling and waste reduction five years in a row, from 2012-2016!

Block The Sun, Not The View

“Stay out of the sun.” We’ve all heard it before, and it’s good advice. But beautiful sunny days are too rare in the Pacific Northwest, so we all want to be outside enjoying the sunshine when we can! Retractable awnings offer the benefits of sun protection without compromising your view. A lateral arm awning will block the sun’s rays from directly overhead, so you can enjoy the outdoors without the negative effects of UVA and UVB rays (click here to learn more about sun protection.) If your home faces west (especially if you’re one of the lucky ones to live on the waterfront!) a drop valance under the front edge of the awning adds extra sun protection. A motorized drop valance needs the simple touch of a button to block the sun and reduce glare in the afternoon and evening when the sun is lower in the sky. Most homeowners choose mesh drop valances, which allows you to see through and appreciate your view without the sun in your eyes.

Do You Wear Sunblock Every Day?

We were asked this question recently and asked in return why do you have to wear sunblock? Awnings are designed to keep you and your loved ones safe the sun’s harmful rays, enabling you to enjoy your time outdoors. In addition, we use Sunbrella fabrics which have been proven to provide up to 98 percent protection from the sun’s harmful effects. After passing rigorous testing, Sunbrella fabrics earned the “Seal of Recommendation” by the Skin Cancer Foundation, the only global organization concerned exclusively with cancer of the skin.
